The Story of Abby Ann…part 5

Aunt Beatrice was obviously a little apprehensive, and not at all anxious to be questioned by me. “If you aren’t able to take care of Uncle Charles, then who has been caring for him?” I asked.

“He has a nurse who attends to him. She is rather strange, but Charles seems to do well with her.” If Aunt Bea was calling someone else strange, this nurse must be a real doozie, I thought.

“How do I go about introducing myself to the nurse and my Uncle?” I asked.

“Yes, introduce yourself,” she said. I would suggest you make your way up the circular stairway and knock on the door. Now…I must go or I’ll be late for bingo. She hopped on her electric wheelchair like it was a motorcycle and managed to hit the round table in the foyer, and the door casing on the way out.

There was a door leading to the circular stairway that would take me to the tower. When I passed through the doorway, it was like I had entered another world. It was dark and dingy as opposed to gorgeous and garish like the other parts of the house I had seen so far. I walked up the winding stairs that seemed to go on forever. At the top of the stairs was another door that I assumed was to the rooms occupied by my Uncle and his nurse.

I took a deep breath and knocked. I waited, but got no response, so I knocked again just as I saw an eyeball looking at me through a very large peephole.

Startled, I jumped back…I heard an unfriendly voice ask “Who’s there, and what do you want?”

“I’m Mr. Sander’s niece, I would like to introduce myself to you and my Uncle, I offered. The eyeball disappeared, and I heard someone slide the deadbolt. The door opened and I saw the person the eyeball  belonged to.

The nurse was dressed in a clean, crisp, nursing uniform complete with the cap. I have to say I couldn’t read her expression very well as she waived me into the room, then locked and bolted the door again.

“I was told to expect you,” she said. “Won’t you please be seated?” The room was dark and sparsely furnished. There was a fire burning in the fireplace. I chose a well worn chair next to the small couch. The nurse sat in a chair opposite me.

I wasn’t sure what to say, so I jumped right in. “My name is Andrea Allen. My husband Aaron and I are now the owners of the estate,” I said. “I want to assure my Uncle, that the agreement includes a provision for My Aunt and him. They may continue to live here indefinitely. The assets are sufficient to provide for your services as well.”

“I knew that too,” she said. “Please address me as Nurse Jones.”

“Certainly,” I agreed. “Now, unless you have questions, I would like to meet my Uncle.”

Nurse Jones rose from her chair, as did I. “Mr. Sanders is resting at the moment,” she offered. “He feels best in the mornings. You may come back then if you like.”

Before I knew it, I was back on the other side of the locked door. I started to go back down the stairs when I noticed another door. It was slightly ajar, so I quietly peeked inside. I could see the shadow of a man in a wheel chair, but I coudn’t see his face clearly. Then, my eyes fell upon something else.

What is on that table, I wondered. I stuck my head in further to get a better view. It looked like doll body parts. Was he indeed making dolls? I needed to think about my discovery. What did this all have to do with Mandy’s new friends? Was the man in the shadows my Uncle? One thing I knew for sure, I would be back in the morning.

I looked at my watch and realized it was almost time to meet Mandy’s tutor. Aaron had spent the morning with our daughter acclimating her to our new home. He would be leaving for the airport shortly as he had a previously scheduled business meeting to attend.

The meeting with the tutor went well. I was relieved that she seemed professional and organized. I had no doubt that Mandy and Ms. Jameson would get along just fine.

After dinner, I went to Mandy’s room and spent some time with her before tucking her in.”I’m so happy you like your teacher,” I said. “I’m sure you will miss your school friends, but we’ll find some new friends, I promise.”

Mandy looked at me with a puzzled expression. “I already have three new friends Mommy,” she said. “Andy and Alice are nice, but Abby Ann is my best friend. They all lived here before the doll maker made them into dolls. They think I’m the little girl who used to live here. This was her room before she disappeared.”

I looked around the room and didn’t see the cute little dolls. “Where did you put them, sweet pea? I don’t see them anywhere.” I was starting to get concerned about where Mandy’s imagination was taking her.

“They’re still with the doll maker, but they’ll be back.” She promised.

“They’re already dolls Mandy, why would they have to go back to the doll maker?”

“They have to go back to help the new doll,”she said, “She just came from the place children go before they become dolls.” The place inside the iron fence.”

Bonnie Blue…part 5…existing or living

20160214_215420-1I hardly slept that night. There had to be clues that I was missing. I went over every detail I could recall, from the first time I saw the doll at Goodwill until now. Was Bonnie Blue manipulating me just for the fun of it? Was she trying to tell me something about her past? Maybe she needed my help, but why?

As the night turned into morning, I grabbed some paper and a pen. I wanted to organize all the thoughts, questions, and possible clues I had come up with. I sat cross-legged on my bed for the better part of two hours, without even so much as a cup of coffee. I was driven, and I wanted nothing to distract me.

When I had exhausted everything including myself, I laid my pen down and looked over my notes. Four things puzzled me. First, she had wept when I said, “welcome home,” right after she told me her name. This was one of very few times she had displayed any kind of emotion. Next, she had alluded to having a fairytale life. She had said life, as if she had lived not mearly existed in the form of a doll. Thirdly, the stuffed pony had appeared out of nowhere and then just as suddenly… vanished. It seemed that Bonnie Blue had been trying to draw attention to the pony. It was after it disappeared, she said she was going to ride him. The fourth and last thought I had written on my paper was indeed, the last thing she had asked of me. I was to think about a moment, no, a defining moment in my life that had changed everything.20160214_223232

Suddenly, I heard myself gasp! Next to the  last thought I had written, I had drawn a picture of a little girl sitting on a swing. She was lovely, and seemed to be very peaceful and content. She was looking at the rainbow of colors in a nearby flower garden. There was nothing about this child I recognized. I looked again, and saw beautiful curls framing her striking face. The curls were red… I sat very still, looking at my drawing. I felt slightly dazed as I laid the paper down and got up from the bed.

The pony had vanished, had Bonnie Blue gone away too?

What?? I’m turning 64?

Kip and I have been home from our dream vacation for a couple of months now. Kip has had some health issues, and in a family our size, a little rain falls sometimes, but we have also had an amazing Thanksgiving and Christmas. We were a family of four when we got married and we have grown to 22 with 2 more great-grands on the way. They are all such blessings.

After being gone awhile, I think we both realize that after your kids are grown, your friends at home are what make it ” home.” Family is where your heart is no matter where you roam.

Back to me. It is now 3:47 a.m. on 12/30/15. On 12/31, I turn (choke, caugh, sputter,) 64.

I couldn’t sleep and I started thinking. After 64 years, there is a lot of life to contemplate. Here, my dear, is how little ol me has changed the course of history.

If I had not been born:

Mason and Craig are children I gave birth to. Mason Jr. And Ethan were born in Wyoming. Mason moved back there after living with us in Wyoming, California, and Texas. Olivia and Charlie wouldn’t have been born if Kip and I had not married and moved to Texas.

Mike, Nikki, Seamus, and Hudson would not have been born because Heidi and Heather, who became my daughters (lovingly shared with me by their Mother Dianne), would not have lived in Colorado and Texas. All future offspring are who they are because Kip and I got married. All of our children’s Mothers and Fathers-in-laws would not have all of those beautiful grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their lives. Are you hearing me Wife-in-law😉?

Ask yourself this. How many lives would be different if you had not been born? Who would miss you most if you died tomorrow? I think your partner in life, because when it comes right down to it, they are the ones most vested in you. Which brother, sister, friend, enemy, cousin, grandchild, co-worker, in-law, that one person who’s life you have touched and maybe didn’t even know it. Who would think about all of the things you said and did the most? I really contemplated this and I was amazed. There were some amens and some uh-ohs.

For instance, when she was alive, my Mother and I did not have the best of relationships. Now, not a day goes by that I don’t think about her and laugh about something she did or smile at the wisdom of the things she said.

God, I am important and I was meant to be!

Some good stuff happened! If you’re reading this, I’m thinking about you, because you must be a loving family member or a true friend 😉.

Happy Birthday to me!

I’m writing this on Friday, and we’re less than 200 miles from home. There will be a couple more posts, but I wanted to show a little of what we saw during our 2 days in Santa Fe. We found a nice RV park just 5 miles from the historical Plaza, which was great since we had to go back and forth to take care of the animals. Once we got our parking spot, everything we saw and did was within walking distance. There is so much history here that I can’t do it justice in this short blog.

See Ya Soon (Day 36) Grants, NM…coming soon Sante Fe!

See Ya in Grants NM
See Ya in Grants NM

Kip reminded me this morning (Thursday) that I hadn’t talked about our one night stay in Grants, NM.

As you all know, I am in charge of finding the RV parks. I’m always a little stressed because sometimes it’s mid afternoon before we know how far we’re going to make it so we can get set up and walk the dogs before dark.

I then look at KOA parks, Good Sams approved, and the internet. I like to look at all of the websites searching for photos, which are the most telling. I also have a map in hand that shows which towns and cities have campgrounds. Then I call to make a reservation. My anxiety doesn’t go away until we pull in and see it for ourselves. I only make reservations in advance if we’re planning to stay more than one night and I know we can make it. Most parks require a deposit when you reserve.

Grants, NM proved to be a pleasant surprise. It is a KOA park in a fairly small city. The owners were so accommodating. They not only gave us fresh, homemade cookies when we arrived, but we could have purchased a turkey, pizza, or brisket dinner. We didn’t do that, but we did purchase a big slice of pie brought to our door with ice cream. Kip had peach and I had mixed berry with rhubarb. We were in camper heaven. They also had a free continental breakfast in the morning. There was a long walking trail through the black black lava rocks from previous volcanic activity.

My only regret is that I didn’t get more photos. You can do all your homework while picking a spot, but in the end luck comes into play too.

I was feeling pretty smug about my booking and navigation skills until yesterday when it took 3 times to get out of Santa Fe. I blame it on the GPS lady because it was clear she didn’t know about all the road work and detours we had to maneuver.

The lesson of the day: Don’t cast your plans in stone, it will most likely cause great anxiety. Oh, and you MUST appreciate your navigater/RV park finder, maybe even send her flowers when you get home.

What does Kip do? He only does all of the driving, he cleans the cat litter after he has hooked us up to water, sewer, and cable TV. He picks up all of the doggie dodo on all of our walks, fixes things that need fixed and the list goes on. Maybe I’ll tell him he doesn’t have to send me flowers.

It must seem as though Kip and I aren’t going to stop until we run out of road. As I write this on Monday evening, we are about 750 miles from home. We took another side trip to Santa Fe, NM which is where we’ll be until Wednesday morning, then it’ll be a straight line to Mabank, TX.

Before we left Williams Sunday morning, Kip and I spent some time taking pictures of their unique and fun downtown area. The theme is based on the fact that the old Route 66 goes through Main Street. Staying in this little town, a short drive from the Southern rim of The Grand Canyon, proved to be a most enjoyable 2 days.

I’m going to have to stop here and catch up later…tomorrow…Exploring Santa Fe!!!

See Ya Soon (Day 33 Saturday) The Grand Canyon

We arrived in Williams, AZ late Friday afternoon and it was pouring down rain. The old route 66 runs down the town’s main Street and reminders of the Highway are prevalent. Our plan was to put the dogs in the Jeep and drive up to the South rim of the Grand Canyon on Saturday. The lady who checked us in, said the forecast was for more cold rain. Since neither of us had seen the Grand Canyon, we decided to stay 2 nights and hope for the best.

To say we were blown away is an understatement. The weather was perfect. It started to rain again as we left the Grand Canyon State Park, and it’s still raining. We’re grateful for both blessings.

We met and visited with several people who were from oversees, and of course, they all wanted to pet the dogs. One couple from England said they have a dog named Cindy that looks just like our Cyndie. The only distraction we had all day was that Sammie cried the whole time. We have no idea why she was upset.

This trip continues to be unbelievable…

I’ll let the pictures do the talking!!IMG_20151017_112947_576

See Ya Soon…A lesson in code

IMG_20151017_115838_776-1 I think I should share a lesson we learned.

A few nights ago we were out visiting with friends and got back to the RV park later than we planned. We left the dogs in the motor home, so we were anxious to get back and take them for their walk. We pulled up to the gate…the locked gate…Kip looked at me and said, “So what’s the code?” The code was inside the RV in the packet of info we had received upon arriving. Panic struck! Kip got out of the car and said, “Just a minute,” and then disappeared into the darkness. After about 10 minutes, I started to get irritated. After a few minutes more, a man in a pickup pulled up to the gate and opened it for me. It closed behind me and I drove on to our spot. The dogs started barking, but I didn’t have a key to get in and Kip wasn’t there. Awhile later he came walking down the street. He told me he had walked around the entire fenced perimeter of the park, and every gate was padlocked. He then walked back to the front gate and found that I was gone. When I asked how he got in, he said that he tried the small gate beside the gate we needed the code for, and it was open…now who do you think had the right to be less than happy? Let’s not argue that. Whatever we get ourselves into, we only have each other to get ourselves out. Besides, it takes two to walk the dogs.

Just remember to take the gate code with you, and each of you should have keys to the RV.

I know this is long, but God forbid I have an unspoken thought.
